Overview

Trezor is the original hardware wallet, created by SatoshiLabs in 2013. It pioneered the concept of keeping crypto private keys offline on a dedicated device, and remains one of the most respected names in crypto security. Unlike Ledger, Trezor's firmware is fully open source, meaning the security community can independently audit and verify the code — a significant advantage for security purists.

Trezor offers two models: the Trezor Safe 3 ($59) and the Trezor Safe 5 ($169). Both provide excellent security for your crypto assets, with the Safe 5 adding a color touchscreen for improved usability. The Trezor Suite companion software provides a clean interface for managing your portfolio, executing trades, and accessing DeFi.

Value & Staking

Trezor doesn't offer traditional bonuses, but Trezor Suite includes built-in exchange functionality through partner services like Invity, allowing users to buy, sell, and swap crypto at competitive rates. Staking for supported assets is available directly through the interface.

The lower price point compared to Ledger (starting at $59) is itself a value proposition, offering institutional-grade security at an accessible price.

Trezor Suite desktop and web app provides portfolio tracking, coin management, built-in exchange, CoinJoin for Bitcoin privacy, and password manager functionality. The suite also supports connecting to third-party wallets like MetaMask.

Supported Cryptos

Trezor supports 1,800+ cryptocurrencies and tokens natively, with additional tokens accessible through third-party wallets like MetaMask (when used as a hardware signer). Major coins including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and all major ERC-20 tokens are supported.

While the native support list is smaller than Ledger's 5,500+, connecting Trezor to MetaMask or similar wallets extends support to virtually any EVM-compatible token.

Security

Trezor's security model is built on full transparency: the firmware, hardware schematics, and software are all open source. This means security researchers worldwide can audit the code and verify there are no backdoors or vulnerabilities.

The Safe 3 and Safe 5 both include a certified Secure Element chip. Shamir Backup (SLIP-39) allows splitting the recovery seed into multiple shares, requiring a minimum number to restore the wallet — adding protection against physical theft of the backup.

Mobile Experience

Trezor Suite is available as a web app accessible from mobile browsers. The Trezor models connect via USB-C, so mobile use requires USB-C compatible phones. While not as seamless as Ledger's Bluetooth connection, the USB connection is inherently more secure.

Trezor provides customer support via email and an extensive knowledge base. The open-source community also provides support through forums and social media. SatoshiLabs maintains active communication about security updates.
